Spade Oak Construction was formed in 1976 by Christopher & Angela Wellington with their two eldest sons Michael and Peter, soon to be joined a year later by their third son Paul. Mike had gained contractual experience with Bardon Hill and Peter selling quarry products at Foster Yeoman. Between them they built up the company with an annual doubling of turnover that continued well into the 1980’s.

Chris managed the accounts and Angie chased the money while the three sons concentrated on enhancing the quality of operations that the company’s reputation was demanding. The success was built on ‘many medium sized contracts rather than a few large ones’ and employing all it’s own staff and labour rather than the all too popular ‘opting out’ by sub contracting. This demanded an organised, logistical operation that developed staff specialising in dealing with the many clients and their needs. An approach which has not changed today where the annual turnover exceeds £34 million and the number of jobs a month averages 250.

David Dawe joined in 1984 and Clive Jamieson (Financial Director) in 1989 and both have long been members of the Group Board.

The subsidiary boards, comprising of 6 directors, have been ‘home grown’ to form a second generation of managers who are taking a greater proportion of responsibility in running the company and ensuring the continuation of the in-house training.

April 2005 saw the majority shareholding of the Group being acquired by Foster Yeoman Ltd. The company continued to operate and expand in its stand-alone capacity which has been core to its success.

The growth continued in early 2006 when Aggregate Industries (part of the Holcim Group, Switzerland) completed the acquisition of Foster Yeoman, and consequently the Spade Oak Group.

Since both buy-outs have in effect made the Group part of one of the largest entities in the industry; the company is now placing more importance than ever in preserving the methods it has employed since day one – building strong, mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers and customers.
