During site preparation the existing asphalt layer or construction site is prepared by removing any existing material or debris. The surface is graded and levelled to provide a stable base for the new asphalt surface.
If necessary, a sub-base layer may be added to reinforce or enhance the road’s stability and load-bearing capacity. The base course, which may include layers of crushed stone or aggregate material, is laid and compacted to create a strong foundation.
Construction equipment, including pavers, rollers, and trucks, are prepared at site.
Upon arrival to the construction site the asphalt delivery vehicle follows the designated traffic routes into the site, banksman assist the lorry driver to a safe waiting area or to the paver to discharge.
The asphalt is loaded into the paving machine either by lorry, excavator, dumper or skid-steer loader. The paving machine spreads the asphalt evenly across the surface.
In areas the machine is unable to access the asphalt will be installed by hand.
A roller follows the paving machine to perform initial compaction. This step removes air voids and ensures good contact between the asphalt and the base surface.
The surface is finished to the specified grade and slope to facilitate appropriate drainage.
The laid asphalt needs time to cool and set. During this period, the road is typically closed to traffic to prevent damage to the newly laid surface.
Throughout the process, quality control measures are implemented to check the thickness, temperature, and compaction of the asphalt.
Once the asphalt has set, road markings, signage, and other necessary features are added.
