CASE STUDY – Surfacing Tennis Courts

With a relationship spanning 17years, Spadeoak was appointed by Cranleigh School to complete resurfacing to nine tennis courts, including the installation of a new fence line and complete with a coloured surface overlay.

As sports specialists Spadeoak had previously completed works to resurface the schools two hockey pitches, Cranleigh School knew who to call to resurface their tennis courts.

Cranleigh school is Surrey’s leading co-educational independent school, offering boarding and day education for pupils aged 13 to 18. Cranleigh has an extensive range of extremely high-standard sporting facilities that includes three full-size artificial pitches, one of which is floodlit, 12 hard Tennis courts alongside nine astro courts in use during the Summer term, eight netball courts, four squash courts and six Fives courts. For Rugby, Football and Cricket, Cranleigh also has 10 grass pitches on site, including an International standard 1st XV pitch, indoor sports centre for Badminton, cricket nets, volleyball, basketball, football, hockey, netball, tennis and dance studio and an indoor 25m swimming pool.

Spadeoak were instructed to resurface the tennis courts on the school site over the school summer holidays to minimise disruption to play or pupil learning period.

The nine courts were located at two locations, the main school where there was six courts totalling 3,214m² and prep school where there was an additional three courts totalling 1,477m².

Spadeoak resurfaced the 4,691m² area with SuperSport asphalt, designed to meet the specific requirements for tennis courts and Multi-Use Game Areas. The fast-draining material ensures there is no standing water on the surface following heavy rainfall and can be used as a SuDS system due to its high permeable drainage capacity.

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are designed to manage stormwater locally, as close to its source as possible, to mimic natural drainage.

SuperSport features bitumen modifiers reducing scuffing and increasing grip ensuring a tough and durable playing surface.

SuperSport is fully compliant with the requirements of the Lawn Tennis Association and SAPCA.

To maximise the usage of the courts lines were installed for tennis and netball to ensure the playing area could be used for multiple sports.

The project was completed on time and to programme, ensuring the pupils had a brand new playing surface when returning to school following the summer break.
